Below is a fact sheet for William Milton Payne. As you can see he was an active and prominent member of the Danville community, being one of the original incorporators. He served as County Assessor, Sheriff and Highway Commissioner, further proof that the Paynes were well known and respected in the small city of Danville and were most certainly acquainted with Abraham Lincoln who served as circuit lawyer in Danville. It is certain that the Paynes would have been invited as guests to participate in the occasions when Presidential Campaigners came to Danville as their presence would have positive influence on voters in those elections. It is only logical.
It is likely that the information below was originally compiled and/or written by Vermilion County historian Hiram W. Beckwith, the son of Dan Beckwith for whom Danville was named. Beckwith was also Abraham Lincoln's law partner in Danville.
