The family of Martha JanE Miller GRUBBS
and Charles Wesley Grubbs
Back to Miller Family Page 1                                                                            Back to Miller Generations 3-5

Notes for CHARLES WESLEY GRUBBS: He was the son of CHARLES LOUIS GRUBBS (1800 – 1847) and ANN POLLACK (1802-1889)  Burial: Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I have a copy of what looks like an incomplete Veterans Burial Card for a Charles W. Grubb. It gives very little information but says that this Charles served in the Civil War as part of Company A, 2nd PA Voluntary Infantry.  His rank was Private. It says he is buried in a cemetery located in Pittsburgh.  No birth date, no death date. I have no real proof that this record is for our Charles W. Grubbs.  But we do know that he died in 1869. He and Martha have 3 children (see below) all born before his death. There are no census records that list him still with his family in 1870 and on any census records thereafter.

Notes for MARTHA JANE MILLER GRUBBS:

On the 1870 census taken on June 14th (3rd Ward, Allegheny City, PA) Martha is reported as a widow, age 28. Her children are Annie - age 7, William- age 5 & Thos. - age 1. Martha Jane's name is listed as “Jennie”, which is a diminutive or affectionate nick-name for Jane.

After Martha Jane Miller Grubbs moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota, in 1904, she lived with Anna May Grubbs Ayers, her daughter and granddaughter, Nathlie G. Ayers, until her death in 1934

On the 1910 and 1920 Census Records of Gregory Co., South Dakota, Martha, is listed living with her daughter, Anna (or "Anne") M. Ayers, born about 1864, and granddaughter Nathole, born 1904. On the 1910 census Martha is listed as the "head" of the household and the address is "Young's Addition to Bonesteel".  In 1920, Martha's brother William Benjamin Miller, age 82, lives with them. In 1930, Martha is still alive at age 90 and living with Ann Ayres (age 66) who owns a garden truck farm in Schierver Twp., Gregory Co., So. Dakota.

The following two records for Martha Jane Miller Grubbs are affirmed by RLDS files

Birth Place: Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. (I, however, know that she was born in Butler, County, PA, because that is where her parents lived.  All their children were born there.  Butler is the county just north of Allegheny County which does encompass most of Pittsburgh. M.H.)

Death Date: Jul 1934

Notes:   Martha Jane Grubbs was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 24 May 1908 at Bonesteel, Gregory, South Dakota, by L. Gamet. She was confirmed by L. Gamet, W. McKee, and James Smith. She attended the Bonesteel, South Dakota Branch.

Marriage Date: 18 Dec 1862

Death Date: Jul 1934

Burial Place: Bonesteel, South Dakota

Cemetery:   Bonesteel Cemetery

Spouse: Charles W Grubbs

Notes: Martha Jane Miller moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota, in 1904. After Martha moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota, in 1904, she lived with Anna May Grubbs Ayers, her divorced daughter and granddaughter Nathlie G. Ayers until her death in 1934.  She was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 12 May 1908.

Children of Martha J. Miller and Charles Wesley Grubbs (A 1910 Census taken in S. Dakota reports that all her children were still living at that time.)

              i.   ANNA MAY GRUBBS, was born 1863 in Allegheny Co. PA, and died 16 Jul 1945 in Mellette County, So. Dakota.

Burial: White River Cemetery, White River, Mellette County, South Dakota. (Information from David Goltry)  Anna married SYLAS AYERS 27 May 1907 in Bonesteel, So. Dakota.  He was born Abt. 1862.     See more details of this marriage below.

             ii.   WILLIAM C. GRUBBS, b. 1865.

             iii.  THOMAS FLETCHER GRUBBS, b. 1869; d. 05 Jan 1956, PA.

More Notes for Martha Jane Miller Grubbs:  After an extensive search, I found no 1880 census records for Martha and her children and of course, the original data contained in the 1890 Census is no longer available. Almost all the population schedules were damaged in a fire in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D.C. in 1921.   I found Martha Grubbs on the 1900 Census (taken in Pierce Co., Wisconsin) living as a boarder with her brother-in-law, Abraham Rice, a widower (age 67).  She is listed as a widow, age 59.  This is probably an arrangement of convenience and necessity.  Her three children are grown, on their own and probably married.  Anna May would have been 37, William C. (no doubt Charles after his father) would be 35 and Thomas Fletcher Grubbs (named after his uncle on his father's side, b. 1841- d.1956) would be 31.

About Silas Ayers

 Name: Silas Ayers

 Age:  45

Spouse Anna M. Grubbs (This record is important because it provides further proof that this Anna is the child of Charles W Grubbs.)

Marriage Date: 27 May 1907

Marriage County:  Gregory

County of Residence:  Gregory, SD

More about Anna

Other facts on the marriage application record is the name of the officiating Priest (
H.W. Smith). Also, that Anna has declared herself as a widow.  We do know that her child Nathlie, is recorded as age 6 on a 1910 Census taken in Bonesteel, SD. This means that she was born before Anna’s marriage to Silas Ayres. So Nathlie could be a child born to a former marriage and Silas has given Nathlie his name. Or perhaps she is really the child of Silas. I guess we will never know for sure. Silas is not listed on the 1910 census. Also Nathlie is living with Anna’s mother Martha Jane and Anna still lists herself as married.  I don’t think Silas has died because I have found his name on later SD census records. On the 1920 census in Schriever, Gregory Co., SD,  Anna is recorded as divorced. M.H.
